About

Michael McCarthy, born on November 27, 1981, in England, embarked on a significant career in professional rugby union before his retirement. He was educated at Sedbergh School. His playing days saw him as a formidable lock and flanker across various high-profile teams. He began his senior career with London Wasps in the 2001-02 season, featuring in Premiership and European Challenge Cup matches. Following this, he joined the Irish side Connacht in 2003, making his debut in the Celtic League and contributing to their European Challenge Cup semi-final run. After a single season with Connacht, McCarthy moved to Newcastle Falcons in 2004, where he played prominently for three years, including in the Heineken Cup, and was recognized as the supporters’ player of the season in 2006.

McCarthy returned to Connacht in 2007, serving the team for six more seasons and earning his 100th cap in 2011. During this second tenure, Connacht achieved their first Heineken Cup qualification. In 2013, he transferred to Leinster, another Irish provincial team, further solidifying his reputation within Irish rugby. He continued to compete in the Pro12 and Heineken Cup, playing a total of 75 games for Leinster. Beyond his club commitments, McCarthy represented Ireland on the international stage, earning 19 caps between 2011 and 2016, including participation in the 2015 Rugby World Cup. His playing career concluded in 2017 after an elbow injury prevented his move to RC Narbonne.

Post-retirement, McCarthy has navigated a career outside of professional rugby, working with wealth management firm St. James’s Place. Despite leaving full-time play, he remains connected to the sport through punditry and corporate engagements. Notably, he has taken on the role of pre-match entertainer for Leinster home games, known by his stage name ‘Devin the Destroyer,’ where he hypes up crowds with activities like the ‘Viking Clap.’ This role, alongside his financial career, demonstrates his adaptability and continued presence in both the business and entertainment spheres. He also engages in speaking events, sharing insights from his extensive sports career.
